| Local
history |

After
1862, Windsor developed rapidly being the main north crossing
from Brisbane down to outlying areas including the Gympie
goldfields. Although the low areas close to the creek were
considered damp and prone to disease, the need for house allotments
grew and the subdivision of Swan Hill Estate (Windsor from
Newmarket Road to the Creek) came into existence in 1884.
The
lower half of the subdivision was built on the area surrounding
Northey Street. These houses were flooded numerous times.
Anyone who lived in Brisbane knew that Northey Street was
one of the first streets to be flooded after heavy rain. Public
concern prompted the Brisbane City Council to resume the land
and the Northey Street site became vacant parkland.
In
April 1994, a group of friends proposed to build a farm based
on ethics and the practical principles of permaculture on
the four hectare site. The council accepted the proposal and
a peppercorn lease of $1 a year was offered to develop the
land. Since then, more than 1500 exotic and native fruit trees,
bushfood plants, shrubs and ground covers have been planted.
All planting at the farm is seen as an opportunity to learn
about permaculture design to create a lush inner city oasis.
