Winter Solstice 2009
Thank you to all our
performers, cooks, artists, organizers, cleaners, donators of food and prizes, volunteers,
raffle ticket buyers and friends who
came - for making this a very special event.
This is a unique community, and that we can feast, dance, greet and affirm in such a
joyous and respectful atmosphere speaks
highly of this city farm and its associated community.
All those who contributed in a major way, along with the financial result and raffle results
will be published when we recover a
little more energy.
In the meantime though, I'd like to relate that the volunteer coordinators were awesome:
Karen and Bob (Kid's & Art Program),
Rob & Lindsay (Infrastructure & Site), Bunya (Bands & Performance Program), Simon
(Bonfire & Soup), Kym & Geoffrey (Cob
Oven), Hilda & Mal (Kitchen), Emma (Info Stall), Llew (Stage, Light & Sound), Sue (Signage).
Also, so many volunters helped out
through the week and on the day. How many hours in total? Hundreds. Remuneration?
Nil. Gratitude? Unlimited.
We can also say here and now though, that the farm generated a surplus that will be used
to both develop infrastructure for
greater community usage of the site (for events and general community use), as well as to
support a permaculture project in
Uganda. The donations for the flood appeal will go towards replacing the chai cafe coffee
machine and office equipment.
We welcome feedback and suggestions for future events - not just the Winter Solstice and
our Equinox events, but also other
possibilities. The activity coordinators will meet and de-brief this coming Thursday 2nd
July, so we'd welcome your thoughts by
then if possible, to community [at] nscf.org.au
Already we know that there will be a greater emphasis on teams of volunteers & our sister
groups having more autonomy in
the planning and delivery, and that we will be bringing forth the Goddess!
Thank you for your support in this and other activities at Northey Street City Farm.
May the abundance for all that we danced for around the fire last Saturday night permeate
all our lives.
And happy next lap of the sun to all.
Rossco (Event Coordinator)
NSCF Flood Appeal
Northey Street City Farm was flooded with over two metres of water recently. Many farm
members (and our chickens) were
evacuated from the netball courts via boat.
Working bees have allowed us to run the Sunday Markets and our courses and workshops
are fully operational. While phone and
email are now operational, our fax is not yet replaced.
Over the last week, people have been cleaning up, but there will be much work required
over the coming weeks. Just turn up
(Tuesday - Friday, 8am – 4pm). If you
can assist with food, please phone 0428364103.
So much equipment, plants, and stock was lost in the flood, and in response to the many
requests on how to assist, we have
launched a...

Sustainable Living Workshops - Open for
Bookings
Our Sustainable
Living Workshops are well underway. These classes are a practical and
affordable opportunity to pick up skills and knowledge in a wide range of fields, including
these offerings for May:
The painting has been officially measured at 710.60 Metres, well and truly a world record
for mud painting on newspaper! Many thanks to Bob McMahon, Karen Shapcott and the art
team here at City Farm who oversaw this ambitious project, and congratulations to all who
participated for proving that art doesn't need to cost the earth! The mud art continues
though, through ongoing Sunday Market mud art – just come on down during the markets
and join in!

Authors Carolyn Nuttall & Janet Millington, along with guests including Gardening
Australia presenter Jerry Coleby-Williams and 60 other guests launched the book in
style.
Northey Street City Farm has compiled its official stance on practically every matter into a
single handy guide, courtesy of a Brisbane City Council grant.
While a hard copy is available at the City Farm library, we are also hosting a more
accessible online version. This
is a fluid document, continually updated over time, so be sure to check nscf.org.au for the
very latest additions.

Sunday Organic Market
Our Organic Growers’ Market, which operates every Sunday from 6:30 to 10:30am is a
terrific place to shop for all your certified organic fruit, vegetables, dairy, meat, bakery and
pantry needs. In between making your selection from a huge range of Brisbane’s freshest
organic produce, you can enjoy breakfast from the Market’s many food stalls which offer
made-on-the spot chai and herbal teas, coffee, sizzling sausages, bacon and eggs. pizzas
and other nutritious options – all made from certified organic produce.
Market Coordinator Paul Ziebarth works closely with the more than 30 stall holders that
proudly exhibit each week to ensure that the Northery Street City Farm Organic Growers’
Market continues to be one of Brisbane’s most popular destinations on Sunday mornings.
And after you finish your weekly shop in relaxed and friendly surroundings, under the
majestic fig trees beside Breakfast Creek, why not visit the organic “Edible Landscapes”
Nursery to pick up your new season's seedlings, plants and trees (or perhaps a gift
voucher for somebody special?)
This remains Brisbane's only Organic Market. We are keen to not only keep up all the
wonderful aspects of the market, but to expand and enhance the marketing experience for
all our patrons, volunteers and stall holders.
City Farm receives donation for Solar Hot Water
System
NSCF was very pleased to receive a donation of $1500 recently from Natural Solutions towards a
solar hot water system for our kitchen. We thank them for this kind donation.
"Natural Solutions" provides Environmental Consultancies throughout the region. Please
visit them at www.naturalsolutions.com.au.
Pictured above, at the presentation, are Genevieve Wills (Management Committee
Secretary), Jane Davissen (representing "Natural Solutions"), Bella Teggins (Emerging
Permaculturist) and Mal Teggins (NSCF Management Committee & Permaculture Design
Group)
If your business would like to make a donation to the farm for this or another project, or
enter into a partnership, please get in touch.
Permaculture Design
Northey Street Permaculture Design has been established by some enthusiastic graduates
along with our experienced designers Dick and Richard. Now all those unable to do a course at
the farm can access the benefits of our team’s combined Permaculture knowledge and
experience, with a consultation or a full design. No job is too large or small.
The price of food is increasing (environmentally and monetarily). There’s never
been a better time to grow your own and reduce your impact on the planet, while saving
money at the same time. You can contact us through the NSCF office on (07) 3857 8775,
the nursery on (07) 3857 8774, email nnorthey [at] bigpond.net.au, or pop over to the info
stall at the Sunday Markets (7-10.30) for details and a chat.
